it has always bothered me that 'rock n roll' has been labeled the devils music, some artists have even taken that label to the extreme and embraced satanistic music (black metal) - i find joy in alot of the less conservative forms of music, and when there is some lyrical content i disagree with i just kind of laugh it off and perceive it as immaturity of the author
(i love snakes too, and have always found venomous snakes to be more beautiful than non-venomous snakes) music is much the same to me, if it doesnt have a BITE to it, i usually get pretty bored with it
favorite artists of mine:
jack johnson (christian universalist whether he knows it or not ha ha)
john mayer
lamb of god (non-christian heavy metal)
pantera
strapping young lad (avant gard metal)
what do others enjoy?

Hi Ron
Early on they all said secular music was from the debbul and we should only listen to Christian music. Well I ditched all my metal albums and much secular stuff yet there were some I did hold onto whew. That was in the good ol' days of LP's.
Well fortunately with the Internet I am getting the songs all back. I listen to the lyrics and in many cases, the music from the 70's had cries out to a Real God as back then folk were also rebelling against the ET church. In fact I had someone give me a link to a black sabbath song and if you did not know better you would swear it was written by a Christian.
The problem is that the church generally does not have answers for the youth and they just well have to fit in, shape up or ship out etc.
Being a musician, I do look at music with a more critical sense and actually listen and read the lyrics. I did a few tracks of supertramp and there one could clearly see that he detested the hypocrisy of the church and ended up in Eastern religion singing to Babaji some Indian guru that reincarnates every 300 years or something - good song but misdirected.
So before you burn all your CD's - chill - I really do not think that God is too offended by what we listen to. Anyways if you look at video from a secular concert or a Christian Concert, can you really spot the difference if the sound is off?
Blessings

It seems the music our kids listen to is wacko compared to what we in our generation enjoy. Rock n' Roll is the devil's music? Right! And so was the Big Band Music of the 1940's that our parents listened to in their youth in the eyes of our grandparents. Glenn Miller was definitely playing "evil music", (it's well publicized that Miller was missing in action when his plane went down over the Pacific during World War II, no doubt attriubted to "God's wrath" for playing "devil music") and 40's drummer Gene Krupa was forever high on cocaine, which is why he could play the drums for long periods of time without the need for a break. And lord knows what our great-grandparents thought of the musical tastes of our grandparents! And so on up the family tree. And when it comes time for our grandchildren, perhaps our children will find our grandchildren's taste in music super bizzare.

You know, when Handel's Messiah first came out it was considered worldly. And look what a blessing it has been to millions of people all over the world. How can you sit when the Hallejuliah chorus is played, everything in my being wants to praise him when I hear that.
In the 1970's I listened to tapes by a man named John Todd. He was a "Christian" who said the devil was in ALL rock mucsic and he had backward tapings to "prove" it. Well, I decided to break all my albums and throw them away. I didn't want to throw them away without breaking them because someone might find them and listen to the "devils" music. I must have gotten rid of $600.00 of music, which bought a lot of albums in the 70's. I'm thankful that I left a lot of my albums at my mom's house and have retrieved them over the years.
I have listened to much of my music from the past and I'm surprised how much spirituality is in much of it. Many of the young people just wanted a God who loved them the way they were, but, instead, they got a god who wanted them to change first before He would love them. They saw a lot of hypocrisy in the world and church and rebelled because they didn't know what else to do. The repressive 50's led to the rebellious 60's. Each generation of young people need their own music, dress, lifestyles in order to make their mark as different from their parents and other generations. That's how I see it, anyway.

I particularly love Metallica's "one", "enter sandman", and "vagabond". Also AC/DC "Hell's bells"

Actually, John was here in San Antonio in the early 70's and claimed to have formerly been a grand druid priest in the occult underworld. Who else to know the most about how satanic rock music is? Especially since satan was in charge of music in heaven (and used to be a giant tambourine ) Is that why rock is so good???

Byron, I think John Todd was exposed as a phoney. Or else he had some kind of mental disease. I can't remember, I just know I felt so "spiritual" when I got rid of my rock and roll music. Now I can hear Grand Funk Railroad singing I can feel him in the morning. I can feel him in the afternoon. That song ministered more to me than almost all the church songs I heard.
When I quit drinking, I played Dylan's Pressing On over and over again. It kept me sober. I wore the tape out but I have it on CD now so I can enjoy it whenever I get a longing for that song.

when i was trying to live the holiness tradition i threw out all of my cds - i can still see them sitting in that garbage can - i too had an impressive collection - similarly, through the beauty of the internet, i have gotten much of my music back, and consider my response to whatever music im listening to MY responsibility, and dont take into consideration so much what the artsists are saying (i think, does that make sense?)
like, someone like jack johnson, who is a modern day john lennon meets Jesus Christ, he has such a peaceful loving message its hard to ignore, but a band like lamb of god that just lambastes the sitting president and everything he does i just kind of let go in one ear and out the other

BLACK SABBATH LYRICS
"After Forever"
Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved? Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you? Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?
When you think about death do you lose your breath or do you keep your cool? Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope - do you think he's a fool? Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light and I've changed my ways And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared at the end of our days
Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say If they knew you believe in God above? They should realize before they criticize that God is the only way to love
Is your mind so small that you have to fall In with the pack wherever they run Will you still sneer when death is near And say they may as well worship the sun?
I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe? You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve
Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone Open your eyes, just realize that he's the one The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate Or will you still jeer at all you hear? Yes! I think it's too late.
Pretty interesting lyrics for a band pronounce satan worhippers - eh?

Ozzie sure loves his wife Sharon. I don't think he'd be where he is without her. You can just tell he loves her with all his heart as he talks about her with great affection and kindness. For that I truly respect him.
And yes, Ozzie, God is the only way to love because he is love.

I always enjoyed listening to the egles, John Denver, mother Mabele Carter, Marvin Rainwater, Charlie Pride, Johny Cash and Gorden lightfoot some of these artists sang gospel songs and deep stories of love as well that sounded as if it was coming from down deep within the soul. Also used to hear Charlie Pride sing in person in the bars around Helena Montana before he was known to the commercial music world, he delivered a down to earth light of hope to many at that time who heard the inner message delivered in the songs he sang and played in person.

Some music does tap into darkness..Ozzy sang praises to Manson for eg. shiver...Barbara Bush loves the song
Christian rock just doesn't touch me it sounds derivative, contrived forced and amateurish..I mean how many 1000 times can you restate basic doctrine to power chords? Still there's a place for singing a song to God..so go for it..just isn't my thing.. Music in general seems to be God's creation and brings him glory..ever watch Sheryl Crowe sing The First Cut is the Deepest?? What a beautiful rendition by a beautiful woman..I bet God even loves watching her do that number... Same for many other songs that are exquisitely beautiful..music is a gift to mankind from God..
